Mirror (noun): Something that gives a true representation. That is the definition if the word mirror, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. It does not say a mirror is something that "tweaks...expressions...". The complete idea of a mirror that changes your face to look like your smiling seems like a complete scam. The main purpose of mirrors is to see how you look, not how a camera thinks you look in order for you to spend more money. Consequently, the name fits; the liar mirror is a liar.
I do not think these mirrors should be used in stores; however, I find it ideal for those suffering in pain or loss. Just as laughing is contagious, smiling is equally capable of spreading. Japanese researcher Shigeo Toshida shows how during her experiment, those who faced a glad reflection felt better while those who encountered the frowning angle felt sadder. Her research explains how bipolar our mood can be when we are confronted with a person with a specific mood or feeling. A person who smiles is seen as more amiable than who a person who just has a straight face or a frown.
These mirrors should not be used in stores due to its deceitful purposes. They should instead be installed in hospitals and maternity wards. In a place where depression may be visible, a smile has the potential to lift up the spirits of those that are victims to depression. Perhaps, if placed in hospitals, the liar mirror could have its name changed to The Mirror of Happiness.
Your hook was very well put. This article was very fascinating. With our world suffering from depression and such, this mirror seems ideal for a momentary solution for those who are in suffering or pain. Your analysis on the physiological effect that this product had was very thorough, it inspired me to research more about the physiological effects that products such as this have on people's emotions. All in all, your post was well written.
ReplyDeleteI must say, what an interesting article. I also think that your idea of placing these mirrors in hospitals is a great idea. I feel that it would have very positive results.Your blog was also very well-written and had a nice blend of summary and commentary while still meeting the 250 word requirement.
ReplyDeleteI really like your hook! It puts an ironic spin into your blog and also helps establish your point of view on the article. I agree with Philip and Jasmine that you had great commentary, analysis, and summary, which can be difficult in a blog post.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to see just how much a facial expression can impact us, even if it is an image of ourselves. I also agree that this mirror should be placed in a place where it could cheer people up instead of getting them to buy items. I also liked how you put in that laughter and smiling can be contagious, which I do know for a fact is true.
Great blog, Matthew!
What an interesting article. It is fascinating that one can create such an ingenious invention. It is also interesting to hear how happier images can brighten up one's mood. Even though I am typically very enthusiastic about technology, I agree that these mirrors should not be used in stores. However, I still think this new invention has potential; like you said, these mirrors should be used in hospitals to cheer people up, and I think this is a great idea. Regarding your commentary, I think it was well-written. As everyone else said, your did a good job combining the summary and analysis.
